Wi‑Fi 7 in the enterprise: a deployment memo

Wi‑Fi 7, based on IEEE 802.11be, raises potential throughput and radio flexibility. The user outcome, however, remains bounded by the wired network, spectrum, client estate, policy and design quality.

Define the outcome first

Peak speed on one test device is rarely a business metric. Identify dense areas, voice and video, mobile terminals, operational clients, guest access and critical applications. Set targets for latency, loss, throughput, roaming time and availability for each scenario.

Wi‑Fi 7 will not repair poor access-point placement, interference, a congested uplink or slow DNS.

Survey 6 GHz as a distinct environment

The band provides more clean spectrum but has different propagation and regional device constraints. Build a predictive model and then validate it on site. Include walls, glass, shelving, machinery and the real position of clients.

The widest channel is not always best in a dense network. Channel planning must balance capacity, reuse and interference.

Verify the complete wired path

  • Switch ports support the required speed without a hidden bottleneck.
  • The PoE budget enables full access-point functionality.
  • Uplinks, aggregation and firewalls can sustain the changed traffic.
  • Cabling and link lengths are certified.
  • Controller, cloud platform and licences support the selected features.

Introduce MLO through a client matrix

Multi-Link Operation can use multiple links, but behaviour depends on access point, operating system, driver and client. Build a device matrix and test association, power use, roaming, voice, VPN, sleep and wake. Enable capabilities for a controlled group first and preserve a tested rollback.

Do not weaken access for compatibility

Separate corporate, managed, guest and IoT devices. Use modern authentication, protected management frames, certificates where practical and dynamic access policy. One legacy client should not force the entire network into a weak mode.

Accept the network by user experience

Run repeatable coverage, capacity, latency, roaming, AP and uplink failure, critical-application and observability tests. Compare results with the baseline. The project is complete when operations can see the cause of degradation and change radio policy safely, not when the last access point turns on.
