Executive brief: eight decisions before an IT project contract

Before product and price are finalized, eight decisions reduce conflicting expectations between business, IT, procurement and delivery teams.

Define the changed outcome

Describe a measurable service or business change, not only a delivery item.

Draw the boundary

List included sites, systems, data and integrations together with important exclusions.

Assign decision owners

Name one accountable owner for the business outcome, architecture, security and acceptance.

Expose unproven assumptions

Highlight performance, compatibility, data quality, lead time and regulatory assumptions. Validate critical ones through assessment or pilot.

Make acceptance operational

Test the workload, failure and recovery, documentation and operational readiness—not merely installation.

Define life after launch

Agree monitoring, support, updates, backup, training, SLA and the boundary between customer and Virtek teams.

Control changes and economics

Define how scope changes are assessed and compare total ownership cost, outage risk and the cost of the next change.

If the eight decisions fit on one page and every participant understands them, detailed project documentation becomes far more useful.
